Yesterday, Friday the 13th proved to be a very lucky day for former Memphian and MSCA member Mike Norton! Mike won an Eisner award for his webcomic “Battlepug” at the 24th annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Whenever I go into the post office and they ask if I need any stamps I always ask them, “Do you have any cartoon ones?” and they usually reply with a “Sorry, no.” Yesterday was different! I was driving south down Highland the other day near the Highland Strip and the University of Memphis when I noticed a girl spray painting the side of the Whatever shop (610 South Highland Street) with some Wild Things characters. I couldn’t get over . . . Last night at the monthly MSCA dinner meeting at Garibaldi’s Pizza our guest speaker was cartoonist Sam Ray, MSCA member and creator of the “Business As Usual” comic strip. Sam discussed how he got into cartooning, writing for “Hagar The Horrible”, and sending cartoons to the syndicates and magazines. After I saw the . . . |
