From 6 – 9 p.m., broaden your holiday gift options by visiting the art studios, galleries and businesses in the Broad Avenue Arts District. Works by more than twenty local and national-based artists are featured.
To assist art enthusiasts with their holiday shopping, many of the artists have created gift-sized works of original art. Odessa (2613 Broad) features a floating installation “Fa la la” where the artwork will be hanging from the ceiling like snowflakes. T Clifton Art’s “Holiday Artstravaganza” (2571 Broad) continues the theme with works in mezzo fresco, enamel, acrylic and sculpture.
MetalWorks (2537 Broad) celebrates the grand opening of their retail gallery space. At Splash Creative (2574 Sam Cooper Blvd), the Memphis Area Women’s Council benefits from sales of t-shirt artwork by local Domestic Violence survivors. Wilmot Originals (1615 Broad) and Studio 2557 (2557 Broad) also will be open.
George Hunt strolls over from South Main and joins the district for a special one-night show at West Memorials (2481 Broad) entitled “Blues on Broad.” There will be a blues band and refreshments available. Also joining in on the festivities for the evening is Lisa Williamson with an exhibit regarding the Junkyard Museum and it’s summer camp featuring Donald Knaack – The Junkman and his junk band performances.

CARTOONIST/ANIMATOR BILL PLYMPTON visited the Memphis College of Art this month, and DaMarco Randle has written a re-cap to accompany his photographs: Bill Plympton is considered one of the more clever and original animators. As a child born and raised in Portland, OR, his dream was to draw with his fanatacism ‘drawn’ to Walt Disney with whom he felt animation died. During that time (1966), there weren’t any animation classes so any artistic advances had to be self-taught. “To be an illustrator, you must do two things: think of ideas fast and draw fast.” As times got hard, he decided to publish his own stories, which included drawing the sketches and scanning them into the computer, then composing them together. In 1985, he published his first animated film called “Boomtown,” which taught him that to be a good animator “you must have a good sense of humor.” Since then, Plympton has been the topic of discussion at San Diego Comic Con, even now having been Oscar nominated for his short film in the 2005 Kanye West video Hear ‘em Say. You can see clips of his cartoons on his official website by clicking his image below. This is always a fun event, so dress up in your own costumes and head on down there! Having attended the past few years, it’s best to get there during the earliest hours possible so you can get good pictures of the actors and of the headstones of those they represent. SPOOKY!! I want to reiterate: Don’t forget you can get your “scare” on and help benefit Youth Villages by attending the Haunted Web of Horrors, two haunts in one! Visit the official website for more information: Also, while you’re at it, don’t forget to go see Paranormal Activity, a movie showing in limited theaters in Memphis’ area only through the 22nd! It is at the Malco Paradiso and Southaven locations. I saw it–VERY scary stuff. Visit www.muleythemule.com for a review of this film.
