DC Cancels Two All-Ages Friendly Titles

The publisher’s October solicitations, released this week, reveal that Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam will end with Issue 21 and Batman: The Brave and the Bold with Issue 22.

Escape From The Asylum is an art show inspired by the Batman comics and features work by artists Jamond Bullock, John Bullock, Patrick Tabor, Joseph Boyd, and Tony Brown.

Show runs from May 15-29, 2010 at Marshall Arts Gallery- 639 Marshall Ave. in Memphis, TN (just down the street from Sun Studios).

Show is open to the public Mon-Fri 10am-7pm, and costume attire is encouraged- so wear your super-suits. For more info click here.

‘Peanuts’ gang sold to Joe Boxer owner for $175M‏

You’ve got a new owner, Charlie Brown.

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. is selling licensing rights for Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang to Iconix Brand Group Inc., the licensing company that owns Joe Boxer and London Fog.

The family of the late “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz will also own part of the business too, giving it more control of and money from the comic strip’s legacy.

Heirs say the deal announced Tuesday for for the 60-year-old comic strip is what the artist would have wanted. Schulz worked for decades to win back the rights to his work, which many other artists like himself sold to appear in print.

Items sought for Gene Colan benefit auction

Marvel and DC legendary artist Gene Colan recently suffered a broken right shoulder and is out of the hospital recovering slowly. Unable to draw, he is unable to raise money to pay upcoming medical bills.

Professionals, fans, dealers, and even musicians are banding together to donate items for an auction to help raise money for Gene, including Stan Lee, Harlan Ellison, Walt Simonson, Bill Sienkiewicz, and many others.

Phoenix Rising heads south

Former Memphian and MSCA member Bob Kimball and his Nashville based band Phoenix Rising will be playing Tunica, MS this summer.

Dave Does Comics- Fulltime!

Heard from my Bushi Tales comics partner Dave Beaty this week. He had some good news- he had just turned in his two weeks notice at his day job so he could draw comics full time! For the past year or so he’s been doing some side work for DC, Marvel, and Aspen, with Scott Clark including last year’s X-Men: Sword of the Braddocks and the DCU Holiday Special.

Lex Luthor For Sale

If you’d like one of my paintings now’s your chance!

I originally did this to show at the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL a couple years ago, and ended up donating it to the HERO Initiative art auction at the Phoenix Cactuscon. Noel Neill (the ORIGINAL Lois Lane) was kind enough to sign it for me before the auction (she starred with Kevin Spacey in Superman Returns).

Well, it’s back up for auction- this time on ebay by Brandon Ladd Burkey, owner of Crossroads Entertainment Co., LLC. and the guy who bought it in Phoenix. Minimum bid is $200 and apparently you get one of my sketchbooks, too.

Best I remember this one is approx. 2′x3′ and it’s airbrush acrylic on canvas.

Stan “The Man” Lee turns 87

Hey, true believers-

Comics legend Stan Lee turned 87 today. Stan created and co-created many of the characters in the Marvel Comics universe including Spiderman, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four, has made cameo appearances in many of the Marvel Comics movies (and Kevin Smith’s Mallrats movie as himself) and is the founder of POW! Entertainment. Stan was born Stanley Martin Lieber on December 28, 1922.

There will be an art show on Friday, December 11, 2009, at the studio of Adam Shaw featuring some of his art in a show titled “The Heidi Series.” There will also be other artists on display, so be sure you show up! Ever wanted to know more about an original member of the MSCA? Sam Ray is one of the guys to talk to. If you missed his talk at the December dinner meeting, this is your chance to get caught up.

We’ll be looking for a speaking member in January, so if you are interested in discussing more about who you are and your work, technique, tools and business, send me an e-mail. The next dinner meeting is January 7, 2010, at 7 pm at Garibaldi’s Pizza on Walker Ave., and would be the night you would speak. And you know me: If someone doesn’t volunteer I will have to appoint!

Business As Usual

Last night at the monthly MSCA dinner meeting at Garibaldi’s Pizza our guest speaker was cartoonist Sam Ray, MSCA member and creator of the “Business As Usual” comic strip.

Sam discussed how he got into cartooning, writing for “Hagar The Horrible”, and sending cartoons to the syndicates and magazines.

After I saw the above cartoon in the Commercial Appeal (the newspaper here) this summer I told him I really dug it and said that if he ever wanted to sell the original to let me know. He said, “Heck, if you like it that much I’ll give it to you.” and he did last night at the meeting! I asked if I could at least buy him a beer. He said, “Ok, you twisted my arm.”

Sam’s one of the original MSCA members and a great guy to talk toons with. You can read more about Sam here.
