Josh Elder isn’t singing the blues…but will be at AnimeBluesCon in Memphis!

The 2011 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced, and comics creator Josh Elder isn’t singing the blues!

Congrats to our buddy Josh Elder and the Reading With Pictures crew for their Harvey Awards nominations!

Josh has self-published comics and written for DC Comics, and has become a regular guest and familiar face in Metropolis at the Superman Celebration each June.

Josh is not only an awesome super-guy (and can prove it!), but is also the Executive Director and Executive Editor for Reading With Pictures.

Their mission-

“Reading With Pictures is a nonprofit organization that advocates the use of comics in the classroom to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for all students. We work with academics to cultivate groundbreaking research into the proper role of comics in education. We collaborate with cartoonists to produce exceptional graphic novel content for scholastic use. Most importantly, we partner with educators to develop a system of best practices for integrating comics into their curriculum. At Reading With Pictures, we get comics into schools and get schools into comics.”

This weekend Josh will be in Memphis for the first ever Anime Blues Con at the Hilton Memphis, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd off Poplar and I-240. Stop by the con and say hi to Josh and congratulate him on the nominations, pick up a copy of Reading With Pictures, and compliment him on his awesome \S/ tattoo. He will be doing a panel on his book, Mail Order Ninja, as well as ones on writing and getting published.

And speaking of the Anime Blues Con, an MSCA Panel at the ABC will be at 3pm on Friday, July 8th. There will also be a table for the MSCA to pass out information and/or members to sell our individual wares. So keep an eye out for MidSouth Cartoonists Association members at the con.

DC Cancels Two All-Ages Friendly Titles

The publisher’s October solicitations, released this week, reveal that Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam will end with Issue 21 and Batman: The Brave and the Bold with Issue 22.

Escape From The Asylum is an art show inspired by the Batman comics and features work by artists Jamond Bullock, John Bullock, Patrick Tabor, Joseph Boyd, and Tony Brown.

Show runs from May 15-29, 2010 at Marshall Arts Gallery- 639 Marshall Ave. in Memphis, TN (just down the street from Sun Studios).

Show is open to the public Mon-Fri 10am-7pm, and costume attire is encouraged- so wear your super-suits. For more info click here.

‘Peanuts’ gang sold to Joe Boxer owner for $175M‏

You’ve got a new owner, Charlie Brown.

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. is selling licensing rights for Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang to Iconix Brand Group Inc., the licensing company that owns Joe Boxer and London Fog.

The family of the late “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz will also own part of the business too, giving it more control of and money from the comic strip’s legacy.

Heirs say the deal announced Tuesday for for the 60-year-old comic strip is what the artist would have wanted. Schulz worked for decades to win back the rights to his work, which many other artists like himself sold to appear in print.

Marvel and DC legendary artist Gene Colan recently suffered a broken right shoulder and is out of the hospital recovering slowly. Unable to draw, he is unable to raise money to pay upcoming medical bills.

Professionals, fans, dealers, and even musicians are banding together to donate items for an auction to help raise money for Gene, including Stan Lee, Harlan Ellison, Walt Simonson, Bill Sienkiewicz, and many others.

Monday, January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. To participate, we formed the Comic Creator’s Alliance–a group of over eighty comic book creators (both web and print) who volunteered our artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause. You may not know it, but there are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the 19th century, what is happening today is happening in secret. So it won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.

So here’s what we did: each creator contributed an original drawing of one of our own female characters, and combined them into a single wallpaper image. The wallpaper features characters from The Phoenix Requiem, Girls with Slingshots, Earthsong, Looking for Group, Shadowgirls, Marsh Rocket, The Uniques and three IDW Publishing titles: Fallen Angel, The Dreamland Chronicles and The Dreamer, and lots, lots more! There will be an art show on Friday, December 11, 2009, at the studio of Adam Shaw featuring some of his art in a show titled “The Heidi Series.” There will also be other artists on display, so be sure you show up!
