‘Peanuts’ gang sold to Joe Boxer owner for $175M‏

You’ve got a new owner, Charlie Brown.

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. is selling licensing rights for Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang to Iconix Brand Group Inc., the licensing company that owns Joe Boxer and London Fog.

The family of the late “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz will also own part of the business too, giving it more control of and money from the comic strip’s legacy.

Heirs say the deal announced Tuesday for for the 60-year-old comic strip is what the artist would have wanted. Schulz worked for decades to win back the rights to his work, which many other artists like himself sold to appear in print.

Items sought for Gene Colan benefit auction

Marvel and DC legendary artist Gene Colan recently suffered a broken right shoulder and is out of the hospital recovering slowly. Unable to draw, he is unable to raise money to pay upcoming medical bills.

Professionals, fans, dealers, and even musicians are banding together to donate items for an auction to help raise money for Gene, including Stan Lee, Harlan Ellison, Walt Simonson, Bill Sienkiewicz, and many others.

Phoenix Rising heads south

Former Memphian and MSCA member Bob Kimball and his Nashville based band Phoenix Rising will be playing Tunica, MS this summer.

Looking for something fun to do on Friday night? There will be an art show on Friday, December 11, 2009, at the studio of Adam Shaw featuring some of his art in a show titled “The Heidi Series.” There will also be other artists on display, so be sure you show up! Ever wanted to know more about an original member of the MSCA? Sam Ray is one of the guys to talk to. If you missed his talk at the December dinner meeting, this is your chance to get caught up.

We’ll be looking for a speaking member in January, so if you are interested in discussing more about who you are and your work, technique, tools and business, send me an e-mail. The next dinner meeting is January 7, 2010, at 7 pm at Garibaldi’s Pizza on Walker Ave., and would be the night you would speak. And you know me: If someone doesn’t volunteer I will have to appoint!

(It’s weird to already be typing 2010!)

Kim’s Story

New Jetta Web Comic

There is a new web story starting up this Friday at www.toshigawa.com. This one is called Kim’s Story.

If you picked up the graphic novel, Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa-Defiance, then you will notice that Kim’s Story fits right in the middle of that book.

Synopsis:
Kim, the young leader of the Toshigawa ninja clan, is on a secret recon mission in the heart of new Tokyo. His back-up is a young group of ninja excited to begin their first mission. However, can the inexperienced group of warriors make it back from this mission alive when they encounter the demon army of the Knave?

Written by Janet Wade and illustrated by Sean Izaakse with colors by Kevin L. Williams (creator of Muley The Mule and editor on Jetta).

This is a free web story that will be running at toshigawa.com. Each Friday they will post a new page of this exciting story. Each story is illustrated and written by guest artists and ties in with the main Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa graphic novel series.

SCARECROW DISPLAYS

Ready to scare up a little fun? Lichterman Nature Center, 5992 Quince in East Memphis, is seeking volunteers (individuals or groups) to build a scarecrow for this fall’s Scarecrow Display.

From Sept. 10 through Nov. 13, 40 scarecrows will be lurking outside in demonstration gardens and een sitting in benches around Lichterman Nature Center. Scarecrows will deliver messages ranging from recycling to planting for wildlife that relate to the display area. Prizes will be awarded for “Most Popular,” “Greenest,” “Most Artistic,” Most Scientific” and “Best Literary.”

PULITZER FOR SPARKY?
My friend from the Charles M. Schulz Museum, Karl Jacque, has been diligently working to get a Pulitzer for Sparky. Please read below and help by sending him a letter to add to the collection:

Hello Everyone,
The Special Award or Citation was not awarded for 2009. I have resubmitted my nomination to professor Sig Gissler and his board for 2010. I am sending professor Gissler’s reply.

In previous years I have had a couple of suggestions from Columbia University. Statements should be sent that specify: Why Sparky over anyone else? Letters from Sparky’s peers, friends and followers listing how Sparky influenced their careers and made a difference in their lives.

I have been requesting that letters be sent to Creative Associates, #1 Snoopy Place, Santa Rosa, CA 95403 to my attention. I suggest we bundle these letters and send them to Professor Gissler in one mailing. I’m not sure about the politics involved. I am open to suggestions. It appears Sparky has been nominated in the past and no action has ever been taken by the board. Possibly a nomination from United Media may be in order. Please go to the Pulitzer Award web-site and look at the winners of past Special Award or Citations. Look at the award for Dr. Seuss. Sparky far exceeds the qualifications given for that award.

Please pass the word requesting letters for our new nomination for 2010.

Professor Gissler’s reply: August 17, 2009

Dear Mr. Jacque:

Thank you for your recent message about a special award for Charles Schulz, the famed cartoonist. While I am not at liberty to discuss the confidential deliberations of the Pulitzer Board, I can say that consideration was given to your previous nomination and, obviously, the Board did not see fit to act. That is not unusual. We receive quite a few nominations — and awards are rarely bestowed.

At this point, the best I can do is to let the appropriate committee know of your continuing hope.
