The Kenosha Festival of Cartooning is a 3 day festival of live presentations, workshops, a gallery show, panel discussions and community outreach by some of the nation’s top cartoonists. The funds raised will be for the appearance fees, travel and lodging expenses of the artists and will allow the Festival events to be completely free to the public. The funds raised will also pay for publicity materials for the festival and to defray shipping costs for some of the original artwork in the festival exhibit.

Our AWESOME guest speakers are: Stephan Pastis of Pearls Before Swine, Greg Cravens of The Buckets, Michael Jantze from The Norm and Jantze Animation Studios, Norm Feuti of Retail and Gil and Dave Coverly of Speed Bump and Parade Magazine. And our panel moderator will be the amazing Tom Racine (who also animated our kick butt video).

The Commercial Appeal Cartoonist Sam Ray has released his first collection of his popular cartoon strip “Business as Usual”. Ray, a West Tennessee native and a graduate of the University of Memphis was first published in the Commercial Appeal in 2009. His work of single-panel cartoons have been published as well in various publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes Magazine, and The Saturday Evening Post.

Nightmares & Daydreams…and The Addams Family?

Things are about to get creepy and spooky on Main Street in downtown Memphis later this month, thanks to a couple MSCA members!

First up is Lin Workman‘s show at the historic (and haunted) Orpheum Theatre. Why is Hernando artist Lin Workman having an art show at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis this month? Well, for one thing- Lin can’t sing or dance!

The other reason is to help raise money for the new Performing Arts and Leadership Center the Orpheum plans to build next door to the theatre. 20% of the proceeds from art sold that week will be directed to the Orpheum’s capital campaign for that project, which hopes to break ground in 2013.

During the run of “The Addams Family” – April 24-29, Lin will have 8-10 pieces of art for sale in the space formerly occupied by the Orpheum’s gift shop. The paintings will be a mixture of his “Scared Silly” cartoons and airbrushed “monsterpiece” portraits and will vary in size and price.

The show will be open during performances and during intermissions. The Orpheum’s doors open one hour before performance times. Lin will be there during the Sunday afternoon performance and will talk with show attendees in the lobby gallery before the show and during intermission.

Lin has been part of the Orpheum’s many charity auctions in the past and is excited and honored for the opportunity to show his work again “where Broadway meets Beale“. Lin is a native Memphian, and was recently transplanted to Hernando, MS- just a few houses down from a cemetery. He is a member of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and the DeSoto Arts Council, and part of the Haunted Web Of Horrors‘ scare crew. His last day job was designing grave markers, tombstones, and other monuments. He dug it, but still feels weird going into cemeteries after dark.

Next up- Friday, April 27, 2012 from 6 – 9 pm, DaMarco Randle will have a solo show at the Ameriprise Financial building during the Main Street Trolley Night (in the arts district). On display will be new paintings, sculptures, and a fashion show of his design, all associated with the theme of his show.

Besides being a fine arts student majoring in Painting at the Memphis College of Art (MCA), DaMarco has also performed with the “Muley the Mule’s Critter Productions” as the character Roy Duck, and has created a pin-up for MAW Productions‘ “Turra: Bombs and Betrayal” graphic novel, part of the “Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa” graphic novel series. He has also been part of many art shows around town, including shows at MCA, Marshall Arts, and the recent MSCA/DAC “Drawing Inspiration” art show at the Banks Gallery in Hernando, MS.

Trolley Nights on South Main Street are 6 pm to 9 pm the last Friday of every month all year, come rain or shine. Jump on the trolley for a free ride to art galleries, restaurants, music, and more!

A Changing of the Guard at the MSCA

This past Thursday was the MSCA’s monthly dinner meeting and something was a bit different this time.

Instead of longtime president Kevin Williams leading the meeting (seated left- near camera), it was the MSCA’s new President Chris Jowers (standing right) and new Vice President Charles Ettinger (standing left).

The two new officers presented some of their ideas for this year’s 25th anniversary of the MSCA and the future of the club. They also went over recent past events such as the MSCA/DAC “Drawing Inspiration” art show in Hernando (which was a big success!), and the two other officer positions- Secretary and Treasurer, that are vacant. Janet Wade had previously held both positions. Any members interested in volunteering for those two positions should contact Chris. It was also announced that I would be taking over the webmaster duties from my wife Nicki Workman. She’s still available for tech support, but I’ll be handling the web-site updates, as well as the club’s social media accounts.

During the meeting member Antonio Johnson was our guest speaker and discussed pre-press techniques for printing. Antonio works for clickorderprint.com and has been helping many of the MSCA members with getting their work printed as books, comics, art prints, and more.

Once Antonio had finished, Chris opened the floor up to discussions for future events the MSCA could be involved in. Some of the suggestions from members and topics discussed were setting tables up at local conventions such as Midsouthcon and the upcoming Anime Blues Con, doing another MSCA comics anthology, organizing club fund raisers and membership drives, using social media, taking convention trips, offering comics classes, and providing more kids activities.

Another upcoming MSCA event suggested by member Marvin Cheveallier (far left) and announced at the meeting was the upcoming Sunday afternoon “Meet & Draw” gatherings at the Italia Restaurant on 1306 Goodman Rd in Southaven, MS. The first one is scheduled on April 22nd at 1:00pm. Like our previous Sat-Art-Days it’s open the the public- and like the dinner meetings good eats are to be had! (Click here to see their menu.)

And thanks to member Andrew Chandler it’s not an MSCA meeting without a little monkeying around!

Chicken Pot Paintings at Marshall Arts and Draw Line Color at GPAC

This week MSCA member DaMarco Randle made an appearance in the Tuesday, March 13th The Commercial Appeal newspaper for his participation in the “Draw Line Color” show at the Germantown Performing Arts Center which runs through March 31st, the same ending date of the show he is also in as part of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association show “Drawing Inspiration” at the DeSoto Arts Council in Hernando, MS.

He’ll also be in an artshow called “Chicken Pot Paintings” this Friday, March 16, from 6 – 9 at Marshall Arts at 639 Marshall Ave, Memphis, TN 38103.

St. Patrick’s Day Sale and Sam Ray Book Signing at Comics and Collectibles

It’s “Business As Usual” at Comics and Collectibles- a 20% off holiday sale and a book signing!

This St. Patty’s day Commercial Appeal cartoonist and longtime MSCA member Sam Ray will be signing copies of his new book- “People Sitting at Desks and Other Strange Behaviors: A Business As Usual Collection”.

Sam will be singing from 1:00-3:00pm at Comics and Collectibles on St. Patrick’s Day, as well as 10 a.m.-noon this Saturday at The Reading Place in his hometown of Ripley, TN.

It can also be found on sale at Booksellers at Laurelwood and Burke’s Books in Memphis, and Something to Read in Jackson, TN, Hastings Books in Dyersburg, TN, and Square Books in Oxford, MS. Sam’s book retails for $10 and includes 160 previously published cartoons.

Sam’s cartoon strip “Business As Usual” appears every day but Monday in The Commercial Appeal’s business section.

What’s up, Dac? MSCA reception at the DeSoto Arts Council a big draw!

Last Saturday night the Mid-South Cartoonists Association and the DeSoto Arts Council opened the doors of the Banks House Gallery in Hernando and invited cartoon fans to join them for the opening reception of “Drawing Inspiration: From Idea to Reality”.

The two groups were hoping to draw a crowd for the opening reception, and they did…

…but the crowd ended up drawing when they arrived!

The show’s theme was showing the process behind creating a cartoon, illustration, or comic page.

Finished cartoons or printed illustrations were displayed next to the original line art, sketches, and/or artist’s notes that show the progression of the image.

Several MSCA members were on hand to do demonstrations, answer questions, or just hang out and draw with the reception guests. Marvin Cheveallier shows how he colors manga pages on his computer.

It was a very “hands on” event! Kevin L. Williams drew a Muley The Mule comic while guests looked on.

It was also a very family friendly event, too. In fact, cartoonist Lonnie Easterling (Spud Comics) brought his whole family.

The “Doodle Room” was very popular with artists of all ages. That’s syndicated artist Greg Cravens (The Buckets) with manga artist Meaghan Beninati drawing funny!

At the last MSCA dinner meeting some of the members did a cartoon jam piece for the show. We usually draw exclusively on napkins at the dinner meetings, but made an exception for the show. Heck, who am I kidding- MSCA members will draw on anything if given the chance!

Everywhere you looked around the Banks House people were drawing or talking toons!

Some folks like artist Charles Ettinger were even doing both at the same time!

A special digital display from BLIZZARD Entertainment featured video game concept art in the “Fantasy Room“.

I’m not sure what these sculpts by DaMarco Randle are, but they are way cool! His fabric dolls above the fireplace were especially creepy and cool.

The show will run through March 31, 2012 at the Banks House. The art is on display in the two front rooms of the gallery.

Gallery and gift shop are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10am – 5pm and located at 564 W. Commerce Street in Hernando, MS- 38632. About 15-20 minutes south of Memphis off Hwy 51 or I-55.
