To celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary the MSCA will be heading down to Hernando, MS for a joint art show this winter with the DeStoto Arts Council.

FEBRUARY 11 – MARCH 31, 2012
“Drawing Inspiration” Art Show- Cartoons & Fantasy Art
Featuring Mid-South Cartoonists Association
with special concept art display from “Starcraft II” artists.

This will be similar our Process Revealed and Are Cartoons Art? art shows a few years back which were both a big success. This show will be held at the DAC’s new location in Hernando- which is next door to their old location, just much bigger!

NEW BANKS HOUSE GALLERY AND GIFT SHOP LOCATION
DeSoto Arts Council – 564 W. Commerce Street, Hernando, MS

The show will be in the Banks House’s two front parlors and runs concurrent with DAC’s Winter Show.

Opening Reception & Art Demonstrations
FEBRUARY 11, 2012: 5 – 7 pm

To get to the art house from Memphis head south on HWY 51 or I-55 to Hernando, MS. Turn right onto Commerce Street. The Banks House mansion is on the right at the corner of Commerce and Elm Street, just past the library- about a few blocks west of HWY51 and the Hernando Courthouse Square.

Gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday 10AM -5PM. Gallery closed for the holidays December 24, 2011 – January 05, 2012.

Hungry for cartoons? MSCA Dinner Meetings 1st Thursday of each month!

The next MSCA Monthly Dinner Meeting is this Thursday, December 1st at the U of M Garibaldi’s Pizza on Walker Avenue near Highland and Southern. Dinner meetings start at 7PM and run until 9-10PM, or until Garibaldi’s employees start turning off lights on us and locking up! Guest speakers usually start around 8pm.

This month we’ll be discussing upcoming art show opportunities for MSCA members, current member projects, self-publishing comics, the cancellation of the MSCA Sat-Art-Days at Comic Cellar and more.

Dinner meetings are free and open to the public, but be sure to bring a few bucks to order off the menu- you’ll be glad you did! Great pizza, salads, sandwiches, and beverages to be had.

Spontaneous cartooning on napkins, sketchbooks and other drawing surfaces have been known to happen during dinner meetings so sure to bring something to draw with and/or on.

Don’t be shy- bring some of your work to show to others at the meetings. We’d love to see what you’ve been working on.

Next dinner meeting will be January 5th, 2012. We’ll be discussing the upcoming MSCA art show at the DeSoto Arts Council’s Art House in February 2012.

Leland Frog Fest 2011 this Saturday- 9/24/11

Coming up this weekend is the Leland Frog Fest- a Festival of the Arts in historic downtown Leland, MS on Saturday, September 24, 2011, which would have been Jim Henson’s 75th birthday.

Special guest Fran Brill from Sesame Street will be on hand for the dedication of the Rainbow Connection Bridge. The MSCA’s Kevin Williams, Muley The Mule, and Lin Workman will be driving down to take part in the frog festivities. Be sure to stop by Kevin and Muley’s table to check out some of Kevin’s art, and visit the The Jim Henson Delta Boyhood Exhibit on the banks of Deer Creek in Leland. If you can’t make it down to Leland, there’s still plenty of events going on this weekend in Memphis. A couple are-

Memphis Ronald McDonald House’s 17th Annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival- Saturday, September 24 Downtown at Auto Zone Park 11:00am- 4:00pm. Variety of ice cream, frozen treats, snacks, and drinks from many local vendors. Children’s Activity Land with games and activities for children big and small. Advance Tickets are $7.00 and $10.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at all area YoLo Frozen Yogurt and SUPERCUT locations.

Brooks Museum’s Chalk Art Festival Saturday, September 24 10am-2 pm -free to celebrate the Brooks’ 95th birthday by drawing on the plaza! 11am – 1pm live music and 12pm birthday cake. (Rain date is 9/25); bring your own street chalk or pastels, or $3 at the Brooks. Hotdogs and drinks will be available for sale. Overton Park- Memphis, TN.

Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce officials are inviting the public to participate in the 2011 Water Tower Festival, September 16 and 17 at the historic Courthouse Square in Hernando at the corner of HWY51 and Commerce Street. This two-day event will offer fun for people of all ages- BBQ contest, arts/crafts, car show, 5K race, poker run, music, and more!

And don’t forget that the Hernando Farmer’s Market runs every Saturday until the end of October at Courthouse Square from 8am-1pm.

Good Grief- CCS’ Schulz Library Building Potentially Lost!

According to The Comics Reporter James Sturm the CCS’ Schulz Library Building may be lost due to storm damages from Hurricane Irene this weekend.

Good news/bad news- no books were lost, but the old firehouse library building has sustained serious storm damage.

The Center For Cartoon Studies is located in White River Junction, Vermont. The Center’s Schulz Library is located nearest the river of any school building.

Have Geek, Will Travel!

A new geek blog travel site is up and running- Have Geek Will Travel…

…and the first geek destination is…Metropolis, IL!

MSCA member Lin Workman blogs about how he first found out about Metropolis, and what has happened there since that first super-trip to the home of Superman.

Each week on Tuesday Lin Workman will be posting a new geek travel blog and a web cartoon to go along with it. Future features will include Geek Survival Guides, Geek of the Week, and more Geek Links. Lin, webmaster Nicki Howe, and their mascot “Geeker” will be taking you along for a guided tour of the geek universe.

Coming up will be trips to the Popeye Picnic, Jim Henson Museum, and Nashville Horror Fest in October.

Orpheum Theatre Annual Art Auction- Free Admission!

The Orpheum Theatre is presenting its Annual Art Auction this Sunday- August 21st.

The Orpheum’s 17th Annual Art Auction celebrates and promotes local artists in Memphis’s diverse and growing art community. 75% of the proceeds go directly to the artists, while the remaining 25% is used to fund Orpheum education programs and the maintenance and preservation of The Theatre.

This year over 2oo pieces of art including original oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings, sculptures, and multimedia projects by 70 artists will be featured- including the MSCA’s Lin Workman (“Sherlock Holmes” art above).

Silent auction starts at 2PM and the live auction starts at 3PM.

Admission is FREE, and a cash bar will be available.

The Orpheum is located at 203 S. Main Street in downtown Memphis.

Hey gang, here are a few news quickies for you-

RIP, UNITED MEDIA: A century-old syndicate closes its historic doors

THE MADISON AVENUE DOORS might be shuttered, but United’s legacy still stands tall above the industry’s skyline.

“We developed and represented some of the best talent in the world,” (Lisa Klem)Wilson says, “from ‘Peanuts’ to ‘Garfield’ to ‘Tarzan’ to ‘Nancy’ … to ‘Rose Is Rose’ to Miss Manners to Eleanor Roosevelt.”

“The history of UFS/NEA is long and rich,” (Amy)Lago says. “NEA began more than 100 years ago … for UFS, the legacies of Schulz and [Jim] Davis alone attest to its former power and glory.”

“No history of daily comics could be written,” Glynn echoes, “without a third or more of it devoted to what United and NEA brought to the readers of the world.” And Glynn’s Universal colleague Lee Salem says: “Many of the talents [United] brought to newspapers and readers are not just household names, but cultural icons.”

Jean Schulz, widow of Charles “Sparky” Schulz, who died in 2000, says that the “Peanuts” company fortunately “has been working with Universal for many years, and Sparky had great respect for Lee Salem and [parent-company founder] John McMeel.”

“But I often shake my head,” she says of United’s demise, “and think, Sparky would not like to see all this.”

“We may move on,” says Lago, who edited “Peanuts,” “but there is the grief of losing a loved one for all of us who shared in her reign.”

First Look: Eliza Dushku Pounces into Animated Catwoman Role

From TV Guide online-

Eliza Dushku is getting catty this fall. The Buffy and Dollhouse alum provides the sultry voice for Catwoman in the animated DVD-movie Batman: Year One and as an added bonus will headline a short film included as a DVD extra. Catwoman was written by popular comic-book and TV scribe Paul Dini.

Batman: Year One will go on sale October 18 on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand and for digital download.

Josh Elder isn’t singing the blues…but will be at AnimeBluesCon in Memphis!

The 2011 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced, and comics creator Josh Elder isn’t singing the blues!

Congrats to our buddy Josh Elder and the Reading With Pictures crew for their Harvey Awards nominations!

BEST ANTHOLOGY and BEST ORIGINAL GRAPHIC PUBLICATION FOR YOUNGER READERS

Josh has self-published comics and written for DC Comics, and has become a regular guest and familiar face in Metropolis at the Superman Celebration each June.

Josh is not only an awesome super-guy (and can prove it!), but is also the Executive Director and Executive Editor for Reading With Pictures.

Their mission-

“Reading With Pictures is a nonprofit organization that advocates the use of comics in the classroom to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for all students. We work with academics to cultivate groundbreaking research into the proper role of comics in education. We collaborate with cartoonists to produce exceptional graphic novel content for scholastic use. Most importantly, we partner with educators to develop a system of best practices for integrating comics into their curriculum. At Reading With Pictures, we get comics into schools and get schools into comics.”

This weekend Josh will be in Memphis for the first ever Anime Blues Con at the Hilton Memphis, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd off Poplar and I-240. Stop by the con and say hi to Josh and congratulate him on the nominations, pick up a copy of Reading With Pictures, and compliment him on his awesome \S/ tattoo. He will be doing a panel on his book, Mail Order Ninja, as well as ones on writing and getting published.

And speaking of the Anime Blues Con, an MSCA Panel at the ABC will be at 3pm on Friday, July 8th. There will also be a table for the MSCA to pass out information and/or members to sell our individual wares. So keep an eye out for MidSouth Cartoonists Association members at the con.
