Drawing Inspiration: From Idea To Reality Art Show at the DAC

To celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary the MSCA will be heading down to Hernando, MS for a joint art show this winter with the DeStoto Arts Council.

FEBRUARY 11 – MARCH 31, 2012
“Drawing Inspiration” Art Show- Cartoons & Fantasy Art
Featuring Mid-South Cartoonists Association
with special concept art display from “Starcraft II” artists.

This will be similar our Process Revealed and Are Cartoons Art? art shows a few years back which were both a big success. This show will be held at the DAC’s new location in Hernando- which is next door to their old location, just much bigger!

NEW BANKS HOUSE GALLERY AND GIFT SHOP LOCATION
DeSoto Arts Council – 564 W. Commerce Street, Hernando, MS

The show will be in the Banks House’s two front parlors and runs concurrent with DAC’s Winter Show.

Opening Reception & Art Demonstrations
FEBRUARY 11, 2012: 5 – 7 pm

To get to the art house from Memphis head south on HWY 51 or I-55 to Hernando, MS. Turn right onto Commerce Street. The Banks House mansion is on the right at the corner of Commerce and Elm Street, just past the library- about a few blocks west of HWY51 and the Hernando Courthouse Square.

Gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday 10AM -5PM. Gallery closed for the holidays December 24, 2011 – January 05, 2012.

Leland Frog Fest 2011 this Saturday- 9/24/11

Coming up this weekend is the Leland Frog Fest- a Festival of the Arts in historic downtown Leland, MS on Saturday, September 24, 2011, which would have been Jim Henson’s 75th birthday.

Special guest Fran Brill from Sesame Street will be on hand for the dedication of the Rainbow Connection Bridge. The MSCA’s Kevin Williams, Muley The Mule, and Lin Workman will be driving down to take part in the frog festivities. Be sure to stop by Kevin and Muley’s table to check out some of Kevin’s art, and visit the The Jim Henson Delta Boyhood Exhibit on the banks of Deer Creek in Leland. If you can’t make it down to Leland, there’s still plenty of events going on this weekend in Memphis. A couple are-

Memphis Ronald McDonald House’s 17th Annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival- Saturday, September 24 Downtown at Auto Zone Park 11:00am- 4:00pm. Variety of ice cream, frozen treats, snacks, and drinks from many local vendors. Children’s Activity Land with games and activities for children big and small. Advance Tickets are $7.00 and $10.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at all area YoLo Frozen Yogurt and SUPERCUT locations.

Brooks Museum’s Chalk Art Festival Saturday, September 24 10am-2 pm -free to celebrate the Brooks’ 95th birthday by drawing on the plaza! 11am – 1pm live music and 12pm birthday cake. (Rain date is 9/25); bring your own street chalk or pastels, or $3 at the Brooks. Hotdogs and drinks will be available for sale. Overton Park- Memphis, TN.

Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce officials are inviting the public to participate in the 2011 Water Tower Festival, September 16 and 17 at the historic Courthouse Square in Hernando at the corner of HWY51 and Commerce Street. This two-day event will offer fun for people of all ages- BBQ contest, arts/crafts, car show, 5K race, poker run, music, and more!

And don’t forget that the Hernando Farmer’s Market runs every Saturday until the end of October at Courthouse Square from 8am-1pm.

Hey gang, got this from our own Greg Cravens-

Hey, folks-

Heads up on the comic booking/cartooning project class I kept threatening
to do- On June 4, 18, and 25 (The first, third, and fourth Saturdays in
June) at 9 am until lunchtime, I’m going to teach anyone who’d like to
come about the process of completing a comic book/comic strip project.

We’ll break up into teams and work as letterers, pencillers, and inkers
and such. I’ll play editor and try to get everyone to understand the WHY
of organizing a project on the front end so that it flows to completion.

It’s not a drawing class, but we’ll all be drawing. Everyone will use
his or her own style and sensibilities AND work with others- thereby
learning what works and how it works when collaborating and communicating.

It’ll be in the Cub Scout room at Trinity United Methodist Church-
downstairs in the education building.

Spread the word- I can’t remember who all has asked about this over
the past few months, so if you know anyone who might be interested
and has time for it, send ‘em this info.

November art events and meetings

Don’t forget that this Thursday is the MSCA Dinner Meeting at 7 pm. We’ll gather at Garibaldi’s Pizza on Walker Ave (across from Tiger Bookstore).

The second gathering is on November 20th at 9 am for Sat-art-day for those who can’t make the Thursday meeting, and to give us an opportunity to get some artwork done with the group as opposed to doing it by ourselves. I can tell you, I draw better when I’m with my artist peers. Meet us at Comic Cellar on Austin Peay Hwy (Ste. 2) north of Yale and the Raleigh Springs Mall.

MSCA Meetings are open to professionals, amateurs and cartooning enthusiasts; writers, artists, editors…if you’re in it, come join us!

Elementary: The Many Faces of the MSCA

The artist reception for the art show “Elementary: The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes” was a big success this past Wednesday night.

Several members of the MSCA were in attendance.

And some like Ronnie and Jane Shenks came bearing gifts!

The Sherlock Candy Bouquet was awesome!

Nicki, her mom, and sister Regina got all of the refreshments together.

Tim Brown as “Isaac your bartender” did a great job with the liquid refreshments.

We had lots of friends attend as well.

The paintings looked great on the walls and were hung by David Lusk.

The paintings are located in the upper and lower lobbies and can be seen during Theatre Memphis business hours.

The art show and play run through Halloween, and MSCA member Jim Palmer is “Prof. Moriarty”.

The art show is afoot!

This October MSCA member Lin Workman will trade his usual black and white “monsterpiece” portraits for the many faces of Sherlock Holmes.

“Elementary: The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes” art show will run from October 15th-31st at Theatre Memphis.

Artist reception is October 20th from 6-8pm and is open to the public.

The show will feature several airbrushed portraits in the lobby and run in conjunction with Theatre Memphis‘ production of “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure” starring MSCA member and Lil’ E creator Jim Palmer as Professor Moriarty.

In other art show news…

“Press Start” Art Show Delayed‏

The committee has decided to delay the fall MSCA art show for now. Please continue to work on your art pieces, though, because it isn’t completely canceled–just delayed.

When we have updated deadlines for submitting art, show dates and location information we will re-notify everyone.

Some good news, the first Sat-art-day Drawing Session at Comic Cellar was a hit. We will have another next month (third Saturday of each month) on Oct. 16th from 9am-12pm. Come out to draw, share ideas, talk techniques and tools of the trade, discuss industry news, and find time to be productively creative!

Thanks to Jason and the Comic Cellar staff for hosting our new monthly event and continuing to support local comic creators.

If you have member news about yourself, please submit it (with pictures or drawings if you wish) so we can share it.

Memphis is going to get a bit more “batty” this weekend.

Escape From The Asylum is an art show inspired by the Batman comics and features work by artists Jamond Bullock, John Bullock, Patrick Tabor, Joseph Boyd, and Tony Brown.

Show runs from May 15-29, 2010 at Marshall Arts Gallery- 639 Marshall Ave. in Memphis, TN (just down the street from Sun Studios).

Show is open to the public Mon-Fri 10am-7pm, and costume attire is encouraged- so wear your super-suits. For more info click here.

The “Sivads of March”..?

You’ve experienced Africa in April and Memphis in May, but are you ready for the “Sivads of March”?

The Sivads of March — a public tribute to the memory of the late Watson Davis, the Malco ad executive who, as Sivad, “the Monster of Ceremonies,” was the host of the “Fantastic Features” horror movie program on WHBQ-TV Channel 13 from 1962 to 1972 — will take place at various venues March 25-28, with movies, an art show, and a rock concert featuring the Reigning Sound.

Davis co-workers and family members are expected to attend, and rare film clips and Sivad “artifacts” will be displayed.

As the comically ghoulish Sivad, Davis — who died five years ago this March 23, at the age of 92 — was simultaneously beloved and frightening, with a community-wide popularity that transcended class and race in a way that perhaps was rivaled only by wrestler Sputnik Monroe and a few other entertainers. A 1963 appearance by Sivad at the Mid-South Fairgrounds attracted 30,000 fans, according to The Commercial Appeal.

Sivads of March highlights will include:

A “monster martini” opening ceremony and reception on March 25 at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, followed by an 8 p.m. screening of the 1958 horror masterpiece, “Night of the Demon.”

Screening of other films originally introduced by Sivad — including “The Giant Claw,” “A Bucket of Blood,” “From Hell It Came” and “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” — at the Brooks, March 26-28, along with a March 28 panel discussion featuring Sivad colleagues and experts. The famous “Fantastic Features” introduction will be shown before each film.

A “Sivad Art Show” at 7 p.m. March 26 at the Adam Shaw Studio, 2547 Broad Ave., featuring Sivad-inspired work by local artists.

“Li’l Film Fest 13” at 2 p.m. March 27 at the Brooks, featuring shorts created by local filmmakers that pay homage to Sivad and the tradition of TV horror hosts and scary movies. (Entries still are being accepted: Visit livefrommemphis.com for more information.)

A March 27 concert featuring the Reigning Sound, the acclaimed band led by former Memphian and Sivad fan Greg Cartwright, at Nocturnal, 1588 Madison. The Reigning Sound’s latest album, “Love and Curses,” is named for a Sivad catchphrase, and the CD itself is imprinted with a picture of Davis’ vampiric alter ego.
